Revolutionary Update: iOS 27.2 Allows Users to Wipe iPhone Storage with Blank Data

Apple has been developing a new feature to enhance the process of erasing an iPhone’s storage, but there’s a twist. Let’s delve into the specifics of this upcoming option.

Introducing a New Feature Exclusive to Chinese Devices

The latest iOS 27.2 beta 1 includes references to an innovative iPhone erasing option that enables users to overwrite the entire storage of the device with blank data, even data that is not actively in use.

Apart from erasing the iPhone’s data, this feature can also overwrite the entire storage with blank data, including inactive storage. Apple cautions that this process may take longer than a standard erase and could impact the device’s longevity.

This development is intriguing because currently, when an iPhone is erased, the device’s encryption keys are deleted, making the remaining data inaccessible. Apple explicitly states this in an Apple Platform Deployment support article:

Erasing (or wiping) the device obliterates all keys in effaceable storage, making all user data cryptographically inaccessible.

Upon analyzing the beta version, 9to5Mac confirmed that this feature will initially be exclusive to iPhone models sold in China. This addition aligns with an impending data-erasure mandate in China.

Starting January 1, 2027, a new Chinese standard will require smartphones and electronic devices to offer a more thorough data erasure method, including overwriting data. For flash storage like that in smartphones, an approved approach involves overwriting user data storage at least once with meaningless data, mirroring Apple’s concept of replacing storage with blank data.

Furthermore, this new erasing option will not be limited to iPhones, as references in the code indicate support for other devices such as iPads, HomePods, and Apple Vision Pro.
