Potential BMW Models Facing the Chopping Block
BMW Confirms Discontinuation of 2 Series Active Tourer
BMW has officially announced the discontinuation of the 2 Series Active Tourer, marking the end of an era for this compact minivan. Munich has revealed that the current generation will be the last one, with no plans for a third generation. This decision comes as part of BMW’s cost-cutting and profitability improvement strategy, which includes phasing out certain models that are no longer sustainable.
Potential Models on the Chopping Block
While BMW has not released a comprehensive list of models that will be discontinued, speculation is rife about which vehicles might be next in line. Several models, including the 4 Series Gran Coupe, i4, XM, and iX, are being scrutinized for their future within the BMW lineup. It is expected that around eight new models will be introduced to replace the outgoing ones.
4 Series Gran Coupe Facing Uncertain Future
The 4 Series Gran Coupe is a strong contender for discontinuation, especially considering BMW’s move towards transforming its Munich plant into an electric vehicle-only facility. With the i4 being produced alongside the current model in Munich, questions arise about the future of the gas-fueled Gran Coupe. The transition to EV-only production could spell the end for this particular model.
The Fate of the i4 Electric Model
Similarly, the i4 electric model’s future hangs in the balance as BMW shifts towards newer EV technology. The Munich plant’s transformation to focus solely on electric vehicles could impact the production of the i4, especially with the introduction of the Neue Klasse i3 as a potential replacement. While BMW has not confirmed the discontinuation of the i4, it remains a possibility.
Challenges Faced by the iX SUV
The iX, BMW’s flagship electric SUV, is also under scrutiny due to advancements in EV technology within the company. With newer electric versions of established SUV models in the pipeline, the iX may struggle to justify its place in the lineup. While production will continue until 2027, the future of the iX beyond that remains uncertain.
Speculation Surrounding the BMW XM
The BMW XM presents a unique case among the models under review, as its sales performance raises questions about its viability. While BMW has not ruled out a second generation, the XM’s future hinges on addressing key issues such as design, packaging, and comfort. Pressure to eliminate low-return models may impact the XM’s long-term prospects.
Transition Towards New Models
While some BMW models have already been discontinued, the company is gearing up to introduce a range of new vehicles to refresh its lineup. The upcoming iX4 and i3 Touring are set to make their debut soon, with an entry-level EV for Europe expected in 2028. BMW is also exploring the possibility of a larger luxury SUV above the X7 for the U.S. market.
Future Prospects for BMW
Amidst the changes in its lineup, BMW is also considering new additions such as the i4 Coupe and Convertible, as well as a sedan version of the i1. The company’s focus on pruning less profitable models while introducing innovative new vehicles reflects its commitment to staying competitive in the evolving automotive landscape.
