Massive’s Rise to the Top: Leading Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon, and a New Ubisoft Dieselpunk MOBA

The Division developers Massive are now "the global brand" in charge of Splinter Cell and Ghost Recon, alongside a new Ubisoft dieselpunk MOBA

Ubisoft’s Massive Entertainment Expands its Influence

In a significant development, Massive Entertainment, the studio behind Tom Clancy’s The Division and Star Wars Outlaws, has expanded its portfolio under the Ubisoft umbrella. Ubisoft, the parent company, has designated Massive Entertainment as “the global label” for several renowned series, including Ghost Recon and Splinter Cell. Additionally, Massive Entertainment will be spearheading the development of an original game, the World War fantasy MOBA, March of Giants.

This move is part of Ubisoft’s strategic reorganization into “creative houses” following a substantial investment from Tencent in March 2025. Tencent’s funding led to the establishment of a dedicated “creative house” for Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six, identified as Ubisoft’s most valuable franchises.

However, this restructuring has not been without its challenges. Mass layoffs, closures, and cancellations have been reported, with employees in creative houses outside the Tencent-backed subsidiary facing heightened risks. Earlier this year, Ubisoft employees staged a strike in response to workforce reductions and related policy changes.

Effective immediately, Massive Entertainment will assume control of the entity previously known as “creative house 2”. Christoph Hartmann, a former Amazon and 2K executive recruited by Ubisoft, will serve as the general manager. The impact on developers within affected teams remains unclear, although Ubisoft has not announced any further layoffs in connection with this transition.

According to a press release, development teams responsible for these franchises in Montréal, Paris, Sweden, and Toronto will now operate under the Massive Entertainment brand. This consolidation aims to leverage their collective creative and technological expertise to enhance these franchises and deliver engaging experiences for dedicated player communities.

Upcoming Projects and Revamps

Ubisoft Toronto has been diligently working on a remake of the first Splinter Cell. Despite recent staff reductions, the remake remains in progress. Additionally, Ubisoft has confirmed the impending release of a new Ghost Recon title.

March of Giants, the World War fantasy MOBA, offers a unique 4v4 gameplay experience where players control giants leading armies of creeps into battle. While the dieselpunk setting is intriguing, initial impressions of the game mechanics are mixed. Interested players can visit the Steam page to sign up for playtesting opportunities.
