Tesla’s Groundbreaking Feature: Use at Your Own Risk
Tesla Introduces Emergency Drive Away Function for Superchargers
Tesla has recently unveiled a new feature called Emergency Drive Away, designed to enhance user convenience and safety at its Supercharger stations. This innovative function allows Tesla vehicles to be shifted into Drive mode while charging, enabling the automatic disconnection of the charging cable from the vehicle.
Announced via social media platform @TeslaCharging, this feature is currently available only at Superchargers in the United States, with the requirement of the latest software update (version 2026.38.3) to unlock the functionality. However, there is no confirmation yet on whether this feature will be extended to Tesla Superchargers in Australia.
Previously, Tesla owners were required to physically disconnect the charging cable from the vehicle once the charging process was complete. With the introduction of Emergency Drive Away, users now have the option to override this step and drive away while the charging handle is still connected.
The operation of the Emergency Drive Away feature involves the vehicle being able to shift into Drive mode during charging. Upon activation, an Emergency Drive Away alert is automatically triggered, prompting the driver to select ‘Activate’ to enable the disconnection of the charging handle from the vehicle, allowing for a quick departure.
However, Tesla has issued a warning that misuse of the Emergency Drive Away function can cause damage to both the vehicle and the Supercharger. Deliberate misuse may result in additional penalties being imposed by the company.
Max de Zegher, Tesla’s director of charging, expressed the company’s deliberation over the decision to introduce this feature, stating that they believe it is a necessary addition. He urged users not to abuse the feature to avoid potential restrictions, promising swift improvements based on user feedback.
The rollout of Emergency Drive Away comes in the wake of a tragic incident at a Tesla Supercharger in Idaho, where a fatal shooting occurred in August. In response, Tesla emphasizes the importance of safety at Supercharger locations and states their commitment to relocating sites that are deemed unsafe to ensure the well-being of users.
For those interested in exploring Tesla’s offerings further, the company invites you to visit the Tesla showroom for an in-depth experience.
