Etched AI Chip Startup Attracting Investment Offers at Double its Value

Just a few months after Etched raised an impressive $700 million at a $21 billion valuation, the AI chip startup is already seeing interest from investors offering bids at double or even higher values, as confirmed by sources close to the company.

Currently, Etched is evaluating bids ranging from $40 billion from top-tier investors to $50 billion from lesser-known backers. While discussions are still in the early stages, potential deal terms may undergo changes if an agreement is reached, with Etched choosing not to provide any comments at this time.

Despite the rapid pace of potentially securing another substantial funding round, Etched is focusing on a lucrative segment of the AI industry by developing full AI hardware systems powered by its own proprietary chips. If Etched manages to raise a similar amount as its previous round, it could potentially secure a financial runway of up to 3.5 years, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Investors are eager to invest in Etched due to its potential to challenge industry giant Nvidia. The startup, founded four years ago, has garnered attention from notable investors, including quant trading firm Jane Street, which not only led the last funding round but also became an early customer of Etched’s AI hardware systems. In July, Etched announced securing $1 billion in customer orders, with Jane Street among its clients, following the successful production of its test chip at a TSMC factory earlier this year.

Robert Wachen, Co-founder and COO of Etched, highlighted the enthusiasm of investors, attributing it to the company’s innovative approach in designing new components to enhance the inference process, which follows user prompts. Etched’s chips are claimed to offer faster processing of tokens at a lower cost compared to Nvidia, making them highly appealing to clients like Jane Street who value speed advantages for maximizing profits.

Furthermore, Etched’s ability to attract top talent from Nvidia has impressed investors, with approximately 15% of the startup’s workforce comprising former employees of the chip giant, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.

In addition to its technological advancements, Etched has expanded its operations by establishing a new 10-megawatt data center in Silicon Valley and setting up a facility in Taiwan to streamline production near TSMC.

The origins of Etched trace back to the serendipitous meeting of Co-founders Gavin Uberti and Chris Zhu during an advanced math course at Harvard, where they joined forces with Wachen, Uberti’s roommate, to embark on their entrepreneurial journey.

Etched’s history is marked by rapid funding rounds at significant valuation leaps. Following a $300 million round at a $10.3 billion valuation led by Sequoia in July, the startup swiftly announced a $700 million round at a $21 billion valuation in September. This trend of consecutive funding rounds, structured as separate tranches with varying valuations, is becoming increasingly common among high-growth startups.
