Edonia’s Meat-Alternative: A Sustainable Solution with 27 Times Lower Carbon Footprint
French FoodTech startup Edonia, a B2B ingredient supplier specializing in ready-to-eat protein ingredients, has successfully raised €15 million to further expand the commercial utilization of its microalgae-based ingredients.
The funding round was led by SWEN Blue Ocean 2, Asterion Ventures, EIT Food, and Bpifrance. This recent investment follows a previous round of €2 million in 2024, as reported by EU-Startups.
CEO Hugo Valentin expressed the company’s goal in a public statement, stating, “The goal now is simple: make enough of it, and bring it to food manufacturers and foodservice operators across Europe, Japan, and the US.”
Edonia’s funding comes at a time of increased investment in European B2B protein and food-ingredient technologies in 2026. In France, other companies like Verley, Standing Ovation, Planetary, MAASH, Vivici, and Pacifico Biolabs have also secured significant funding for their innovative food technologies.
Asterion Ventures Partner, Marine Reygrobellet, praised Edonia for its fully developed product, scalability, and market positioning. She highlighted the company’s vision, sales capabilities, and solid commercial pipeline.
Founded in 2023, Edonia specializes in developing ready-to-eat protein ingredients made from microalgae for foodservice operators and manufacturers. The company has already secured over €30 million in pre-contracted revenue from industrial partners and its products are being utilized in catering and ready-meal applications.
At the core of Edonia’s technology is Edonization, a patented process that transforms spirulina into a whole-food protein ingredient. Their flagship product, Edo, contains 27g of protein per 100g and is rich in iron. The processing method gives the ingredient a tender and fluffy texture similar to minced meat without the need for extensive additives.
Edonia claims that Edo’s carbon footprint can be up to 27 times lower than beef, making it a sustainable and environmentally friendly protein source. The company is positioning its technology as a way for manufacturers and foodservice companies to incorporate spirulina into everyday dishes.
Investment Director at SWEN Blue Ocean 2, Julie Peyrache, highlighted the increasing demand for nutritious and sustainable food options. She praised Edonia for providing innovative microalgae-based ingredients that meet consumer demands for health, taste, and sustainability.
Edonia has already launched its products in collaboration with catering group Newrest and retail market Dietbon, with positive feedback from customers who have switched to the Edo alternative.
Overall, Edonia’s innovative approach to protein ingredients and sustainable food production has garnered significant attention and support from investors and consumers alike. The company’s continued success in the food industry showcases the growing interest in alternative protein sources and sustainable food technologies.
