Voice-Activated Functions on Garmin Watches Cause Battery Drain

The latest Garmin watches now feature hands-free voice activation, similar to Siri and Google Gemini on Apple and Wear OS watches. Users can initiate actions like starting a timer or workout by saying ‘OK Garmin’.

While this feature brings Garmin wearables in line with modern smartwatches, users have reported a significant decrease in battery life when hands-free activation is enabled. Some users have experienced a battery drain of 35% to 50% on devices like the high-end Fenix 8.

According to complaints on Garmin’s forums, owners of the Fenix 8 are particularly affected, with one user noting a reduced battery life of only seven days after the update, compared to the previous duration.

An Inconvenient Trade-Off

To address the battery drain issue, users can simply disable the hands-free activation feature, which should restore the watch’s battery life to normal levels. However, this solution is less than ideal considering it was a key software enhancement introduced by Garmin.

In contrast to the fitness-focused features of the Samsung Galaxy Watch 9 and Apple Watch Series 12, which offer insights into heart health and daily cardio load, Garmin’s focus on voice activation aimed to enhance user experience but inadvertently led to a significant battery drain problem.
