Android 17’s Advanced Security Feature: Safeguarding Stolen Phones

Google recently announced a new security feature on Threads that allows users to block access to Quick Settings on Android devices. This feature can be accessed through the settings menu, specifically under Settings > Security & Privacy > Device Unlock or Settings > Display & Touch > Lock screen. The exact location may vary depending on the Android device being used.

Benefits of the New Security Feature

The implementation of this security feature by Google is a significant step in enhancing the security of Android devices. One key advantage is the prevention of potential security breaches in case the phone is stolen. By blocking access to Quick Settings, thieves are unable to enable Bluetooth and install malware on the device, thus protecting user data.

Furthermore, this feature also helps in locating a missing device. Users can use ‘Find Hub’ and their mobile data to track their phone. However, if the thief disables mobile data via Quick Settings, they are effectively locked out of the device, enhancing security measures.

Despite the restriction on Quick Settings, other functionalities such as torch, Eye Comfort Mode, and non-security-related features remain accessible for user convenience.

Currently, the new security feature is only available for participants in the Android 17 QPR 3 Beta 2 program. Users with newer Google Pixel smartphones can test this feature, with plans to roll it out to all Android 17 devices in the future.
