AMD’s FSR 4.1 Enhancements Coming to Xbox Consoles and Handhelds
AMD Introduces FSR 4.1 Technology to Xbox Consoles, Laptops, and More
AMD has recently announced the arrival of its latest upscaling technology, FSR 4.1, to a range of devices including the Xbox Series S and X consoles, laptops, 6000-series GPUs, and the Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X handhelds.
The release of FSR 4.1 is imminent, with availability starting for Radeon RX 6000-series GPUs and select Ryzen AI devices today. Xbox developers can expect access to the technology in the near future, as confirmed by Microsoft’s Jason Ronald.
Earlier this year, AMD unveiled FSR 4.1 for Radeon RX 9000-series graphics cards and promised to extend support to older GPUs and handhelds. The technology aims to enhance performance in over 300 games, including popular titles like Cyberpunk 2077, Battlefield 6, and Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
The introduction of FSR 4.1 follows a recent collaboration between Sony and AMD to bring Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) to the base PS5. AMD’s Jack Huynh emphasizes the company’s commitment to expanding the technology to a wider audience, with significant optimizations and improvements made for gamers.
While users of Radeon RX 6000-series GPUs and certain powered devices can access FSR 4.1 immediately, Xbox console owners will have to wait a bit longer for the update. Xbox CTO Scott Van Vilet highlights the collaboration with AMD to enhance performance and visual quality for players, hinting at future developments with Project Helix.
The potential impact of FSR 4.1 on Xbox console games, especially the Xbox Series S, is significant. The technology’s availability for older AMD-powered handhelds indicates a broader reach, with speculation on its integration into devices like the Steam Deck. Valve’s confirmation on this remains pending.
Update, October 20th: Added Jason Ronald’s comment and context about the Steam Deck.
