Unions File Unfair Labour Practice Complaints Against Microsoft Over Xbox Layoffs

Recently, the Communications Workers of America (CWA) union and their Canadian counterpart CWA Canada have taken legal action against Microsoft, specifically regarding the handling of mass layoffs at Xbox. These unions have filed unfair labour practice complaints with the US National Labour Relations Board (NRLB) against the tech giant. The allegations include claims of Microsoft failing to provide crucial information to the unions and engaging in bad faith bargaining during the process.

According to Game Developer, the complaints accuse Microsoft of not adhering to legal obligations by dismissing employees without proper notice or discussion with the union, which is required during ongoing collective agreement negotiations. Carmel Smyth, president of CWA Canada, emphasized the importance of respecting employees’ rights and ensuring fair treatment in the workplace. The unions are prepared to take further legal action to defend the rights of Bethesda Game Studios workers affected by the layoffs.

An Xbox spokesperson responded to these allegations by stating that the company values its employees’ voices and is committed to engaging in effects bargaining with the union. Microsoft remains focused on supporting impacted employees during the transition period while also striving to strengthen the organization for the future.

Meanwhile, the CWA has organized rallies outside the offices of popular game developers such as Bethesda, ZeniMax, and Id Software, to raise awareness about the situation and advocate for workers’ rights.
