Inside the Vault: A Glimpse of BMW’s Elite Collection – 60 Years of Excellence Exhibit
ALPINA has a significant place in the history and passion of BMW. One of the best displays of the brand can be found at The Ultimate Driving Museum in Greer, South Carolina. The ALPINA: 60 Years of Excellence exhibit, presented by the BMW Car Club of America Foundation, showcases a collection of fascinating and historic ALPINA models. This exhibit offers a glimpse into ALPINA’s journey over the past six decades, featuring everything from memorabilia to genuine race cars.
Exciting ALPINA 5 Series Models
ALPINA’s versions of the BMW 5 Series have often been more exhilarating than their M Division counterparts. The B7 Turbo, introduced in 1984, held the title of the fastest four-door car in the world. With a powerful 300 bhp engine, the B7 Turbo underwent significant modifications including new suspension, brakes, wheels, and seats. The B9 3.5, the first ALPINA model based on the E28 5 Series, had slightly less power but boasted a higher production volume compared to the B7 Turbo.
Unique ALPINA Models
The ALPINA RLE, also known as the ALPINA Z1, is an exceptionally rare model. Only 66 RLE units were ever built, with seven cars being modified post-production without an ALPINA VIN. The ZLE received a slight power increase to around 200 bhp and featured subtle aesthetic enhancements. The ALPINA graphics on the side of the Z1 helped distinguish it from a regular Z1.
A Touch of ALPINA on the 3 Series
The E36 BMW 3 Series received the ALPINA treatment, enhancing an already impressive vehicle. The exhibit features a wagon and convertible model, along with an E30 3 Series and E46 3 Series off-camera. These cars are equipped with ALPINA 20-spoke wheels and iconic ALPINA graphics. Under the hood, you’re likely to find an inline-six engine, although ALPINA also offered a V8-powered BMW E36.
ALPINA’s Signature Wheels
ALPINA is known for its distinctive 20-spoke alloy wheels, but the exhibit showcases a variety of designs. The ALPINA V8 Roadster, based on the BMW Z8, features a unique “five-spoke” wheel design with 20 spokes arranged differently. Despite the design variation, these wheels maintain the signature ALPINA style.
Rare Race Cars and More
Given ALPINA’s connection to BMW’s motorsport heritage, the exhibit includes race cars like the Number 22 E30 M3, which competed in Group A/DTM. Surrounded by memorabilia and other ALPINA cars, this race car is a testament to ALPINA’s racing legacy.
