Nintendo’s Virtual Game Card Dilemma: Online Play Restrictions Spark Controversy
Nintendo has recently introduced Virtual Game Cards for the Nintendo Switch, impacting the ability to play the same digital game online on two devices simultaneously. This change was discovered by users on ResetEra after downloading the latest software update, version 20.0.0. Previously, players could log into the game owner’s account on two different Switch consoles to play together online. However, with the implementation of Virtual Game Cards, this method no longer works as the Game Cards treat digital games as a single cartridge.
The previous method involved the game owner setting up the game on their primary console and then allowing the second player to log in and play online on the secondary console. This allowed two people to play the same digital copy of a game online together. Despite this change, simultaneous offline play is still possible by setting the Switch to offline mode through the new Online License option in the settings.
The removal of this feature has received backlash from players who enjoyed playing online with friends without having to purchase multiple copies of the same game. Some have referred to it as a “downgrade” in the gaming community. However, Nintendo has also introduced Gameshare with the latest update, allowing players to play certain games online together via local wireless.
While the upcoming release of the Nintendo Switch 2 may bring about changes, it remains to be seen whether features like Gameshare will fully replace the previous method. Players who frequently shared their Switch library and played online with others are now left seeking alternative solutions.
If you were accustomed to using this method to enjoy online gaming with friends or family, share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below. Stay tuned for further updates on Nintendo’s gaming features and potential solutions to address the recent changes.
