2026 Toyota HiLux EV to offer 240km range, 1.6t towing

Toyota Europe has officially disclosed estimated figures for the upcoming battery electric vehicle (BEV) Toyota HiLux, set to be released overseas in December and arrive in Australia in early 2026.

The 2026 Toyota HiLux will be available in various European markets with 48V mild-hybrid diesel and pure electric powertrain options. European customers will have access to the non-48V 2.8L diesel engine, similar to the Australian model, as well as the 2.7-litre petrol engine which is no longer offered in Australia.

The highlight of the European media release is the preliminary information on the HiLux BEV. This electric utility vehicle will be equipped with a 59.2kWh lithium-ion battery, dual electric motors providing permanent all-wheel drive, a payload of approximately 715kg, a towing capacity of around 1600kg, and a WLTP driving range of about 240km.

In comparison, the HiLux ‘Hybrid 48V’ features V-Active technology with a 48V-assisted 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine producing 150kW/500Nm and a braked tow capacity of 3500kg.

Toyota has emphasized that they are aiming for best-in-class charging capabilities to reduce vehicle downtime. Additionally, the HiLux BEV’s body-on-frame construction includes measures to safeguard the battery from damage or water ingress, with a wading depth equal to the current diesel model.

The vehicle also comes with a Multi-Terrain Select system offering different modes to adjust brake and torque control for various terrains, providing an experience equivalent to driving in L4 range in a conventionally powered vehicle.

Toyota Australia has recently revealed pricing and initial specifications for the diesel 2026 HiLux range, starting from $33,990 plus on-road costs. The HiLux BEV is scheduled to arrive in Australia in early 2026, while a hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicle (FCEV) is planned for 2028.

Sean Hanley, Toyota Australia’s vice president of sales and marketing, mentioned that the HiLux BEV is primarily targeted towards fleets and urban trade users. Fleet sales account for 48% of Toyota’s total sales in Australia, approximately 120,000 vehicles per year.

The introduction of the HiLux BEV aligns with Toyota’s decarbonization strategy, with a focus on exploring opportunities beyond vehicle production. The vehicle is expected to have a passenger-like payload, catering to a niche market segment.

Toyota previously conducted a 12-month trial of an electric HiLux at BHP’s Port Headland operations in Western Australia, indicating the upcoming series production of the HiLux BEV.
