Apple launches a Digital ID and says it’ll be accepted by the TSA

Apple Introduces Digital IDs in Apple Wallet for US Passport Holders

Apple has announced the launch of Digital IDs, a new feature that enables users to create and store their ID in Apple Wallet using their US passport. This innovation is set to bring convenience to travelers, especially at TSA checkpoints for domestic travel in over 250 airports across the US.

Benefits and Limitations of Apple’s Digital ID

With Digital IDs, users can now present their ID in place of a REAL ID at TSA checkpoints using their iPhone or Apple Watch. However, Apple clarifies that this digital ID is not a substitute for a physical passport and cannot be used for international travel or border crossings.

Expanding Digital ID Access

While Apple already offers the option to store driver’s licenses in Apple Wallet in certain states, the Digital ID feature serves as an alternative for individuals in states without digital driver’s license support or those without a REAL ID or state ID. Initially announced at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference, the Digital ID feature was delayed from its intended release with iOS 26.

How to Create a Digital ID

To set up a Digital ID, users can access the Wallet app, tap the “plus” button, and select Digital ID. The process involves scanning the photo page and chip of the physical passport for authenticity, as well as completing a selfie and facial recognition steps for verification.

Using Digital ID

Users can present their Digital ID by accessing Apple Wallet and choosing the ID, then holding their device near an identity reader. Apple emphasizes that the feature is encrypted for user privacy and security, ensuring that data remains confidential during ID presentations.

Future Expansion and Security Measures

While the specific airports accepting Digital IDs are yet to be disclosed, Apple hints at future plans to extend the feature’s usability to select businesses and organizations. Additionally, the company reassures users that presenting a Digital ID does not require unlocking or handing over the device, maintaining security protocols similar to digital driver’s licenses.
