Revolutionizing Indoor IoT Connectivity: The Future of Wireless Power with AI-Driven LED Systems
A groundbreaking dual-mode LED-based optical wireless power transmission system, capable of operating in varying lighting conditions, has been developed by researchers at Science Tokyo. This system, combined with AI-powered image recognition, can efficiently power multiple devices continuously, offering a cost-effective and safe solution for sustainable indoor IoT infrastructure.
The rise of Internet of Things (IoT) technology has created a demand for innovative power solutions that are both efficient and flexible. Traditional methods like batteries and cables have limitations such as frequent charging, mobility restrictions, and power loss. Optical wireless power transmission (OWPT) emerges as a promising technology that can overcome these challenges by transmitting energy wirelessly through light.
While most current OWPT research focuses on laser-based systems, the safety regulations for indoor IoT applications make LED-based systems more suitable. LED-based OWPT systems are safer, reliable, cost-effective, and long-lasting. However, they face challenges with power loss over long distances and inconsistent performance in changing lighting conditions.
To address these challenges, Professor Tomoyuki Miyamoto and doctoral researcher Mingzhi Zhao from the Institute of Science Tokyo have developed a cutting-edge LED-based OWPT system. This system automatically adjusts to both bright and dark environments, ensuring efficient power delivery to multiple IoT devices. Their research was published in the journal Optics Express on October 24, 2025.
The system utilizes an adaptive lens system with a double-layer lens configuration to minimize power loss during long-distance transmission. It also features an adjustable reflector for accurate beam aiming, controlled by a depth camera with RGB and IR sensors. The PV receivers are equipped with retroreflective sheets for continuous operation under different lighting conditions.
With these innovations, the auto-OWPT system can target multiple PV receivers of various sizes and distances, achieving stable power transmission up to five meters. This system is poised to revolutionize wireless power transmission in smart factories, homes, and other indoor environments, where safe, dynamic, and scalable power delivery is crucial for sustainable IoT infrastructure.
