Volkswagen T-Roc R: First details revealed, production to start in 2027

Exciting Details About the Next-Generation Volkswagen T-Roc R

The automotive world is abuzz with information about the upcoming second-generation Volkswagen T-Roc R. While enthusiasts eagerly await its arrival, it seems that we might have to exercise some patience before seeing this model on our local roads.

One of the most intriguing updates is that the new T-Roc R will be equipped with the same 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine found in the Golf R. In Europe, it will also feature a mild-hybrid system to meet stringent Euro 7 emissions regulations. Despite this addition, the power output of 245kW and 420Nm remains unchanged.

For transmission, the T-Roc R will come exclusively with a seven-speed dual-clutch automated gearbox and all-wheel drive. Additionally, drivers can opt for a titanium Akrapovic exhaust as an optional extra for enhanced performance.

During the official UK launch of the second-generation T-Roc, journalists caught a glimpse of a heavily camouflaged version of the new T-Roc R. This model showcased striking black 20-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 245/35 Hankook Ventus Z Evo tires.

As production of the first-generation T-Roc R for the Australian market nears completion, Volkswagen Australia anticipates having sufficient stock to last into the early months of 2026. However, for those who miss out on this initial batch, the wait for the second-generation model is expected to be quite lengthy. Production of the new T-Roc R is slated to commence in October 2027, with arrival in local showrooms not expected until 2028 at the earliest.

The second-generation T-Roc, unveiled in late August, is built on the latest MQB Evo platform. It boasts larger dimensions, measuring 4373mm in length, 1828mm in width, 1562mm in height, and featuring a 2631mm wheelbase. Compared to its predecessor, the new T-Roc is 122mm longer, 9mm wider, 9mm taller, and has a 28mm longer wheelbase.

At its European launch, the new T-Roc will offer a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder Miller Cycle petrol engine in two configurations: 85kW/220Nm and 110kW/250Nm. Both variants will be paired with a seven-speed automated dual-clutch transmission driving the front wheels. Additionally, a 48V mild-hybrid system will provide a temporary boost of up to 14kW and 56Nm.

Looking ahead, a fully hybrid drivetrain, distinct from mild-hybrid or plug-in hybrid systems, is in development. This setup will feature the same 1.5-litre engine and a larger battery pack positioned beneath the rear seats.
