AI Revolution: Amazon’s Innovative Video Recaps for Streaming Shows
Amazon Prime Video Introduces AI-Powered Video Recaps Feature
Amazon Prime Video is launching a new feature that utilizes generative AI to offer viewers a quick recap of a show they’ve been watching before delving into a new season. Known as Video Recaps, this feature uses AI to identify the essential plot points of a show and crafts a concise yet high-quality summary video by blending selected clips with music, dialogue, and narration.
The Video Recaps feature is currently being tested in beta on select English-language Prime Original series, including popular titles like Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, Upload, Bosch, The Rig, and Fallout (ahead of the premiere of season two on December 17th, 2025). Viewers can access these recaps, along with the previously introduced text-based X-Ray Recaps, by clicking on a recap button on the detail page when transitioning to the next season of a supported series. Initially available on Fire TV devices, Amazon plans to expand the feature to more devices in the near future.
The AI behind the Video Recaps feature first analyzes the key plot points and character developments of a season to deliver a comprehensive understanding of the most impactful moments for viewers. It then selects appropriate video clips and combines them with sound effects and an AI-generated voiceover narration. The length of the recaps varies depending on the show, with a season three recap of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan reportedly lasting three minutes.
While the Video Recaps feature offers a convenient way for viewers to refresh their memory, some may question the need for AI in creating these summaries. Concerns about potential inaccuracies that could lead to confusion when starting a new season have been raised. With less than 20 original drama series on the platform, the availability of Video Recaps for all shows on Prime remains limited. The question arises whether employing human reviewers, as opposed to AI, would be a more reliable approach, especially for shows like Citadel.
