Game Boy emulator now available on the iPhone following App Store rules change [update: gone]

Exciting Update: The recent removal of an app from the App Store has stirred up quite a buzz. Let’s delve into the details below.

Apple made a significant change to its App Store regulations last week, seemingly allowing game emulators to be used on iPhones for the first time.

Following this policy update, the initial emulator applications are starting to make their way onto the store. One such app is iGBA, a free Game Boy game emulator designed for iPhone and iPad. This emulator allows users to load and play ROMs directly on their devices, a feature that Apple would have outright rejected just a fortnight ago.

The developer of iGBA is clearly taking advantage of this rule change. The app appears to be a derivative of the open-source project GBA4iOS, albeit with embedded advertisements for monetization. (It’s worth noting that Riley Testut has confirmed no involvement in the submission of this app.)

Nonetheless, iGBA is a comprehensive emulator, offering the ability to download Game Boy Advance or Game Boy Color ROMs from the internet and play them within the app. Features such as save states, customizable virtual controllers, haptic feedback settings, and AirPlay support for external display projection are all included.

The alterations to the App Store guidelines left some ambiguity regarding the allowance of sideloaded ROM installation, as the language referenced licensed emulated programs within the host application.

However, assuming that the approval of iGBA was intentional and not an oversight by reviewers, it seems that there are now no restrictions on ROM loading capabilities. This opens up the App Store to a plethora of game emulators that can now flourish and thrive.
