BMW has introduced a groundbreaking update allowing its electric vehicles to utilize Tesla Superchargers across the United States. Effective December 10, this move instantly enhances the charging network for BMW EV owners by incorporating over 2,000 Tesla stations and 25,000+ Superchargers into the BMW Charging Network.
This strategic decision aligns with BMW’s commitment to embracing broader charging compatibility, particularly as the industry transitions to the North American Charging Standard (NACS).
Implications for BMW Drivers
By integrating Superchargers into their network, BMW grants its customers access to a combined total of 180,000 public charging points throughout North America. This comprehensive network includes partnerships with prominent providers such as IONNA, Electrify America, ChargePoint, EVgo, and more, all conveniently accessible through Shell Recharge within the My BMW app.
Each supported station is seamlessly integrated into the vehicle’s navigation system and the app. Furthermore, charging initiation can be automated through Plug & Charge where available, eliminating the need for screens or additional apps at the station.
Charging Process at Tesla Stations for BMW EVs
BMW electric vehicles can leverage the Supercharger network in two distinct ways:
NACS Stations:
- The latest BMW EV models, including the i4, i5, i7, and iX, can charge at NACS-equipped stations using a CCS-to-NACS DC adapter. It is advised to utilize only BMW-approved adapters for these sessions, with official adapters set to be available for purchase as accessories from the second quarter of 2026.
Magic Dock Stations:
- Some Tesla locations are equipped with the innovative Magic Dock, featuring a built-in CCS-to-NACS adapter. This unique setup allows any BMW EV, including older models like the i3, to charge effortlessly at these sites without requiring additional hardware.
BMW plans to transition upcoming vehicle models to native NACS ports, commencing with the 2026 i5 M60, followed by subsequent models throughout the year, including the anticipated iX3. Notably, sightings of an i5 test mule in Colorado earlier this year showcased a native NACS port.
Seamless Plug & Charge Functionality at Tesla Superchargers

BMW’s innovative Plug & Charge feature is now seamlessly operational at Tesla Superchargers, streamlining the charging process for drivers.
Key points to note include:
- Pricing adheres to Tesla’s standard rate structure for non-Tesla vehicles.
- The Tesla app is not mandatory for charging.
- Billing is managed through the customer’s Shell Recharge account within the My BMW app.
- Drivers without a Shell Recharge account must create one to access charging facilities.
