Strong contractor belief in AI for industry-wide transformation

The construction industry is experiencing a revolution with the introduction of AI technology. A recent study by Dodge Construction Network and CMiC reveals that AI is set to transform the industry, with 87% of contractors believing it will have a significant impact on their business.

One of the key findings of the study, titled ‘AI for Contractors,’ is that AI is streamlining processes such as proposal generation, progress tracking, and contract risk review. Automated tools are proving to be highly effective, with contractors reporting increased efficiency and improved project outcomes.

AI is enabling project managers to focus on strategic decision-making rather than administrative tasks, while finance teams are benefiting from predictive insights. Operations leaders are also leveraging AI for data-driven intelligence, leading to enhanced project delivery. Rather than replacing human expertise, AI is enhancing human input.

Contractors see AI as a catalyst for reshaping their operations, enabling predictive insights and improving overall outcomes. Tighter cost controls, improved scheduling, and higher quality project delivery are some of the benefits being reported.

Despite low current adoption rates, the construction industry is preparing for wider implementation of AI. Companies are investing in pilot programs, staff training, and strategic planning for AI integration. Budget allocation, team development, workflow adaptation, and AI assessment are key areas of focus.

Early adopters of AI are experiencing positive results, with over 70% reporting the effectiveness of AI tools compared to traditional methods. This suggests a potential for rapid growth in AI adoption throughout the industry.

Concerns around AI adoption primarily revolve around security and accuracy. Contractors are wary of the accuracy of AI outputs and the security of company data. Internal resistance to change, implementation costs, and data quality are also cited as key concerns.

Larger contractors are more likely to rely on AI, with concerns around data quality and reliability. However, there is a general openness to adopting AI, with a focus on understanding how AI works and improving software capabilities.

Despite challenges, contractors believe in the benefits of AI and are eager to explore its potential. Emerging AI functionalities such as automated construction analysis, intelligent permit submissions, and autonomous schedule optimization are of particular interest.

The construction industry is on the cusp of a new era with AI technology. While there are obstacles to overcome, contractors are ready to embrace AI-enabled tools for more efficient and effective project delivery.
