Apple Embraces Third-Party App Stores: Revolutionizing the iOS Experience in Japan
Apple’s Updates to iOS App Store in Japan
In response to recent legislation in Japan, Apple has announced significant changes to its iOS App Store. The tech giant will now allow third-party app stores and alternative payment processing options. However, these changes come with new commission fees for transactions.
Alternative Payment Options and Commission Fees
App Store developers will now have the freedom to incorporate alternative payment methods alongside Apple’s own system or direct users to external websites for purchases. Apple will continue to levy a commission of up to 21 percent for in-app transactions, with a 15 percent fee for digital goods bought through linked websites.
User Warnings and Epic Games CEO’s Response
To ensure transparency, Apple will display alerts to users when utilizing third-party app stores or alternative payment methods. Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, highlighted these warnings and Apple’s commission fees as reasons why Fortnite will not be returning to iOS in Japan at this time. Similar concerns over warnings and fees have arisen in the US, where Apple recently faced a setback in its legal battle with Epic regarding antitrust issues.
