BMW iX4 prototype with camouflage reveals sloping roofline and rakish coupe proportions

BMW’s iX4: The First Electric Sports Activity Coupe

Spotted once again in Germany, camouflaged prototypes of BMW’s upcoming iX4 signal a significant shift away from traditional combustion-powered vehicles. The transition from the X4’s legacy to the electric iX4 marks a bold step for BMW as it embraces the all-new Neue Klasse platform. The iX4, with its internal code “NA7,” represents a groundbreaking achievement for the company as its first-ever all-electric crossover coupe.

Embracing the Coupe Aesthetic

Despite heavy camouflage, the test vehicle’s coupe-like silhouette is unmistakable. The prototype exudes a more aggressive and sleek profile compared to its predecessor, the X4 “G02,” featuring muscular fenders that enhance its lowered and sportier stance. The front design shares similarities with the iX3 “NA5,” but the real transformation is evident from the B-pillars onwards.

The narrowing roofline emphasizes the coupe aesthetic, reducing the greenhouse size and highlighting the sleek silhouette. While the iX4 retains a quarter window from the iX3, it is notably smaller, signaling a departure from the traditional SUV cabin spaciousness. Potential compromises in rear headroom and cargo space are expected, aligning with the coupe-inspired proportions.

An intriguing design detail on the prototype is the horizontal cutout in the tailgate spoiler, possibly housing the third brake light. The wheels showcase a fresh two-tone design, while flush door handles borrowed from the iX3 maintain a cohesive look.

Interior Resonating with the iX3

The interior of the iX4 mirrors the iX3’s architecture, departing significantly from X4’s conventional layout. Physical buttons and the iDrive rotary dial are replaced with a minimalist approach, featuring a prominent 17.9-inch touchscreen as the central interface. The integration of BMW’s iDrive X system introduces Panoramic Vision, offering a windshield projection display with customizable widgets for an enhanced driving experience.
