4 Essential Upgrades for My Next Phone
It is important to note that I do not have a dislike for artificial intelligence. The technology is undeniably useful and is integrated into almost every platform and device, including smartphones. However, the increasing focus on AI in new phone launches and tech events has shifted attention away from meaningful hardware improvements.
While AI has its benefits, there is a limit to how much of it is necessary. The initial innovative concept has now become excessive and sometimes unnecessary. While features like email summarization and call note-taking are helpful, there is a need for practical upgrades that truly enhance daily life.
The Need for Faster Charging Technology
Fast charging technology is a must-have feature for modern smartphones. Despite concerns about battery life degradation, advancements in Battery Management Systems have made it possible to implement fast charging safely. Brands like OnePlus and Xiaomi have introduced high-speed charging standards, surpassing the capabilities of major competitors like Samsung and Apple.
Experiencing fast charging on a daily basis highlights the inconvenience of going back to slow-charging devices. Instead of focusing on battery-hungry AI features, manufacturers should prioritize faster charging technology that significantly improves user experience.
The Significance of Larger Batteries
The spotlight on battery capacity has grown in recent years, with phones like the Oppo Find X9 Pro and Xiaomi 17 Pro Max offering significantly larger battery sizes compared to flagship models from Apple and Samsung. Advancements in battery technology have allowed for increased energy capacity without compromising device weight or performance.
While major manufacturers have been conservative in their approach to battery size, Chinese brands have been pushing boundaries by offering longer battery life and faster charging capabilities. It is time for premium devices to prioritize larger batteries to meet the growing demand for extended usage.
When a mid-range phone lasts two days while a £1,200/$1200 flagship struggles to make it through one, the idea of premium begins to lose its meaning.
Enhancing PC Integration
The seamless integration between devices like phones, laptops, and tablets is crucial for a cohesive user experience. While Apple has excelled in creating a connected ecosystem, Android and Windows platforms still face challenges in achieving similar levels of integration. Samsung’s DeX and Microsoft’s Phone Link show promise but are limited in compatibility and performance.
There is a need for universal standards that enable effortless communication between Android phones and Windows PCs, creating a more unified and user-friendly experience across different devices.
Improving Haptic Feedback
Quality haptic feedback plays a significant role in enhancing user interaction with smartphones. Despite the importance of precise and responsive feedback, many Android devices, even high-end ones, struggle to deliver satisfactory haptic experiences. Investing in better haptic technology can elevate the overall user experience by providing more tactile and immersive interactions.
You can pack in the best display, fastest chip, and smartest software, but if the vibration motor feels cheap, the experience feels cheap.
Prioritizing Essential Features
While AI features have their place, it is essential to focus on core hardware improvements that make a tangible difference in daily use. Fast charging, larger batteries, seamless device integration, and quality haptic feedback may not be flashy selling points, but they significantly contribute to a better user experience on a day-to-day basis.
