Mazda locks in another Chinese EV for Australia, this time to take on the Tesla Model Y

Mazda Introduces New Electric SUV to Australian Market

In an exciting development, Mazda is set to launch another electric vehicle (EV) in Australia this year, adding to its lineup and providing competition for popular models like the Tesla Model Y and Model 3. Like its competitors, these new Mazdas are also manufactured in China.

The latest addition to Mazda’s electric vehicle range is the Mazda CX-6e, a mid-size electric SUV that will join the previously announced 6e mid-size electric liftback set for release later this year.

While Mazda has confirmed a 2026 release date for the new electric SUV, specific details such as pricing and specifications will be revealed closer to the launch date. The CX-6e, known as the EZ-60 in China, was developed in collaboration with Chinese automotive giant Changan, which is recognized in Australia as the owner of the Deepal EV brand.

After making its debut as the EZ-60 last April, the global CX-6e was recently unveiled at the Brussels motor show alongside the announcement of European specifications. The European version of the CX-6e features a 78kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, offering an electric range of up to 483km on the WLTP cycle. It also boasts a maximum DC fast-charge rate of 195kW and an AC charge rate of 11kW, with energy consumption rated at 18.9-19.4 kWh/100km on the WLTP cycle.

Powering the CX-6e is a single 190kW/290Nm electric motor that drives the rear wheels, enabling the SUV to accelerate from 0-60mph (0-96km/h) in 7.9 seconds. Notably, there is no dual-motor all-wheel drive variant available, and the extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) powertrain with a smaller 31.73kWh battery and a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine remains exclusive to the Chinese market for now.

Measuring 4850mm long, 1935mm wide, and 1620mm tall on a 2902mm wheelbase, the CX-6e is similar in size to the unrelated CX-60, which offers a range of powertrain options including petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid.

Comparatively, the top-selling Tesla Model Y measures 4792mm long, 1982mm wide, and 1624mm tall on a 2890mm wheelbase. The CX-6e offers 468 litres of boot space, expanding to 1434L with the second row of seats folded flat.

While sharing its platform with the Deepal S07, the CX-6e features distinct Mazda exterior styling. Inside, the SUV showcases a modern design with a large 26-inch screen that combines the instruments and infotainment system. The infotainment system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while a head-up display is located in front of the driver.

Offered in three different interior colorways in Europe (black, Warm Beige, and two-tone Amethyst and White), the CX-6e features Mazda’s Maztex leatherette upholstery, with the Amethyst interior complementing the exclusive Nightfall Violet exterior finish.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the Australian release of the Mazda CX-6e, Mazda Australia managing director Vinesh Bhindi stated, “When you pair this unmistakable craftsmanship with the acclaimed Jinba-Ittai driving dynamics and cutting-edge technology, it’s clear that this is not just another EV, it’s a Mazda through and through.”

Stay tuned for more updates on the Mazda CX-6e as its launch date approaches.
