BMW has announced a new safety recall in the United States for a limited number of early F-chassis vehicles. The recall affects certain 2014 model-year 3 Series sedans (F30), 4 Series coupes (F32), and 2014–2015 2 Series coupes (F22). The issue involves a potential crack in the head airbag inflator at a weld joint, which could lead to gas leakage or even rupture.

According to the recall filing, the problem lies with the head (side curtain) airbag inflator, which may fail at the weld joint, allowing gas to escape or causing the inflator to rupture. The safety risks associated with this issue are significant, as a rupture could release sharp metal fragments into or out of the vehicle, while a gas leak could result in the curtain airbag only partially inflating during a crash.

The recall affects a total of 851 vehicles in the U.S. market under the NHTSA campaign number 25V871. The affected models and model years are as follows:

  • 2014 BMW 4 Series Coupe: 428i / 435i (including xDrive variants)
  • 2014–2015 BMW 2 Series Coupe: 228i / M235i (including xDrive variants)

What is the solution?

The remedy for this issue is simple: dealers will replace the head airbags free of charge. BMW is expected to send out owner notification letters by February 6, 2026. What should owners do now?

Even if you have not received the letter yet, there are a few steps you can take:

1. Check your VIN on NHTSA’s recall lookup or BMW’s recall page to verify if your specific vehicle is included.
2. If your VIN indicates an open recall, schedule the repair with any BMW dealer as the replacement is free.
