Windows 11 Update Woes: Microsoft Faces Backlash Over Buggy January 2026 Patch

Microsoft’s latest update for Windows 11 has caused a stir among users, with reports of various issues plaguing the system. The tech giant’s first attempt to address these problems with an emergency patch over the weekend only led to the need for a second out-of-band fix to tackle additional issues.

One of the major issues reported by users was shutdown problems on certain machines, prompting Microsoft to take immediate action. The latest update not only addresses these shutdown issues but also aims to resolve crashes related to popular cloud storage services like OneDrive and Dropbox.

While the initial shutdown bug was primarily affecting Enterprise and IoT editions of Windows 11 version 23H2, the new out-of-band update targets OneDrive and Dropbox crashes on the latest 24H2 and 25H2 versions of the operating system.

The release of these emergency updates on weekends has left IT administrators with a hectic start to their workweek. And the challenges may not end there, as Microsoft is now investigating reports of boot failures that could be linked to the January 2026 security update.

Some PCs have been experiencing bluescreens with a UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME stop code after installing the January update, prompting Microsoft to issue a warning to IT admins. The company is actively investigating these boot failures, although the exact cause has not yet been confirmed.

It’s worth noting that a similar incident occurred last year when a security update was initially blamed for SSD issues, only to later discover that the root cause was outdated firmware and motherboard BIOS versions.
