Strava and Komoot finally bring offline maps to Apple Watch

Offline Maps Now Available on Apple Watch for Strava and Komoot Users

Cyclists, hikers, and runners rejoice as two popular apps, Strava and Komoot, have introduced offline maps for the Apple Watch. This new feature addresses a common frustration among users who can now easily access routes and track workouts directly on their smartwatch without the need to carry their bulky iPhones.

While Strava restricts offline maps to its subscribers, Komoot offers this feature for free, with the option to unlock additional map regions for a fee. Komoot also includes turn-by-turn navigation, making it a comprehensive solution for outdoor enthusiasts. Strava’s subscription costs $11.99 per month or $79.99 annually, plus applicable taxes.

The Apple Watch Ultra has been praised for its independence from the iPhone, but users still had to carry their phones for route guidance. Third-party apps like WorkOutDoors and Footpath offered solutions, albeit at an extra cost. With offline maps on Strava and Komoot, Apple Watch users can now enjoy a more seamless experience and reduce their reliance on devices like Garmin watches.

Komoot’s Apple Watch app has received praise for its user-friendly interface and superior performance compared to Strava. The app promises to introduce advanced features such as auto-rerouting in future updates, further enhancing the user experience.

Tom Eldred, product manager at Komoot, emphasized the app’s goal of enabling users to fully utilize the Apple Watch independently. He stated, “For many outdoor enthusiasts, the freedom to disconnect is a vital aspect of their experience. We wanted to empower our community to leave their phones behind and immerse themselves in nature without distractions.”
