The Decline of Android 17: Why He Will Fade into Obscurity
Android has been around for nearly two decades, but it continues to face a significant challenge. Despite the availability of the latest version, Android 16, on various top-tier smartphones including Google Pixel devices, the update process for older devices remains slow.
Recent distribution data highlights this issue, with only 7.5 percent of Android devices currently running Android 16, despite its launch in June of the previous year. This is a slight improvement from the 4.5 percent adoption rate of Android 15 in April 2025.
The slow rollout of Android updates, particularly by manufacturers like Samsung, has contributed to this delay in adoption among users of older devices.

Despite the progress, Android’s adoption rate pales in comparison to iOS, with iOS 26 installed on nearly 30 percent of supported devices. This disparity is partly due to the diverse range of manufacturers using Android compared to Apple’s unified hardware and software ecosystem.
However, the slow adoption of new Android versions has a significant impact on current and future Android users, as highlighted by the delayed rollout of essential features.
Android 17 is coming – but who cares?
Anticipation for the upcoming Android 17 is high among users who are likely to benefit directly from the new features. Early adopters of devices like the Google Pixel 10 Pro XL can expect timely updates to Android 17, potentially even through beta programs.
Who can blame you for not getting excited about what Google reveals in its next glossy keynote?
However, for the majority of Android users using devices from various manufacturers, the excitement for new Android versions is tempered by the uncertainty of receiving timely updates.

This disparity in update timelines underscores a key issue: the lack of widespread access to new Android features for the majority of users until updates are actually received.
Many valuable Android features introduced in recent versions have been limited to Pixel devices, which represent a small fraction of the global market share. This exclusivity means that most users miss out on features like Call Screening, Now Playing, Scam Detection, and the Personal Safety app.

In recent times, Android updates have primarily focused on bug fixes and security enhancements rather than new features. However, the issue of unsupported devices poses a significant challenge.
The big unsupported phone issue
Data from 9to5Google highlights the extensive fragmentation of the Android user base, with a considerable number of devices still running older versions of the operating system. This fragmentation raises concerns about the security and support for these devices.
Using an unsupported phone exposes users to security risks, as these devices lack essential security patches and updates to protect against threats like malware.
There’s still a strong chance that millions of people are using unsupported phones
To mitigate these risks, it is crucial to ensure that your device is receiving regular updates and security patches. If your device is no longer supported, it is advisable to upgrade to a supported handset to ensure your data’s safety.

While new Android versions are in development, the challenge remains in ensuring that all users have access to timely updates for security and functionality. The priority should always be on maintaining a secure and functional device rather than chasing the latest software version.
Therefore, the lukewarm reception to Android 17 upon its release should not come as a surprise, especially considering that many users may still be waiting to receive Android 16.
