The Impact of Sony’s Decision to Discontinue Physical Disc Production

Since Sony’s announcement about ending production of games on physical discs, the controversy surrounding this decision shows no signs of fading away.

It’s been nearly a month since the initial announcement, and every video uploaded on YouTube by Sony has been inundated with comments about this move, overshadowing any discussion about the video’s content itself.

Back in July, Sony made the bold announcement that starting from January 2028, they will cease the production of physical discs for PlayStation console games. Instead, boxed releases will include a digital download code.

Sid Shuman, Sony’s Senior Director of Content Communications, emphasized:

The shift towards digital media aligns with consumer preferences and industry trends, prompting us to discontinue physical game disc production for new PlayStation console games starting January 2028. This transition will not affect games released before this date in disc format.

As the gaming community increasingly favors digital content over physical discs, this move allows us to cater to their preferences and enhance their gaming experience.

We are committed to fostering innovation in game accessibility and providing players with options for purchasing new games, whether through retailers or the PlayStation Store.

The digital gaming landscape has evolved rapidly, with Sony reporting that 78% of full PlayStation game sales were digital through FY25. However, there has been a slight decrease in digital sales percentage from 83% in the previous year to 82% in the first quarter of FY26.

While these statistics include indie games that are primarily digital, there is a noticeable decline in physical sales even for major titles. Industry experts reveal that only a handful of PS5 games have sold over 100,000 physical copies in the US in 2026, with publishers like Capcom seeing a sharp decrease in physical game sales.

Despite the challenges, Sony remains steadfast in its decision to phase out disc media, as discussed during a recent Q&A session with investors.
