Empowering NATO Europe: Uplift360’s Strategic Partnership for Advanced Materials Supply
Uplift360 Secures Multi-Year Framework Agreement with Luxembourg Directorate of Defence
After NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte announced a multinational project on defense critical raw materials at the NATO Summit Defence Industry Forum, British advanced materials startup Uplift360 has been granted a multi-year framework agreement with the Luxembourg Directorate of Defence (DOD).
With the goal of enhancing Europe’s sovereign supply of advanced materials, Uplift360 plans to manufacture high-performance materials sourced only from European suppliers. This strategy aims to lessen the risk of geopolitical disruptions and supply chain interruptions.
The recent achievement follows Uplift360’s successful €7.4 million Seed funding round in February, dedicated to addressing the recovery and reuse of high-value composite waste in the aerospace, defense, and industrial sectors.
Sam Staincliffe, co-founder and CEO of Uplift360, emphasizes the increasing demand for advanced materials in NATO Europe. He highlights the importance of establishing continent-wide supply chain resilience through their partnership with Luxembourg DOD. Staincliffe envisions scaling up advanced materials production to meet industry demands over the next decade.
Established in Bristol in 2021, Uplift360 specializes in securing and producing critical advanced materials such as carbon fiber and aramids for European defense and industry sectors. The company focuses on sourcing, recovering, and regenerating high-value materials to ensure a secure industrial supply chain.
As geopolitical uncertainties and supply chain vulnerabilities escalate, access to advanced materials becomes a crucial strategic advantage for industries. The recent NATO Summit highlighted Europe’s rapid rearmament and emphasized the importance of industrial resilience for the continent’s security.
Yuriko Backes, Luxembourg Minister of Defence, underscores the significance of robust supply chains in supporting defense industrial ramp-up. The multi-year framework agreement with Uplift360 aims to foster innovation, enhance resource efficiency, and contribute to resilience and environmental protection.
Through the collaboration, Uplift360 will serve as the strategic materials partner to Luxembourg DOD, providing insights on advanced material requirements, expanding production capacity, and developing new technologies for secure material supply.
The partnership between Uplift360 and Luxembourg DOD aligns with the Defense Industrial Strategy, promoting the growth of a sovereign, innovative, and secure defense sector. The company’s chemical processes and advanced material expertise aim to strengthen industry operations and supply chains, with potential for replication across NATO member countries.
Ari Kristinn Jónsson, President of NATO Innovation Fund, praises the strategic capabilities enabled by the framework agreement with Uplift360. He commends the company for addressing vulnerabilities in Europe’s advanced materials supply chain and contributing to NATO’s industrial base strengthening efforts.
