Google’s AI note-taking app now allows you to interact with books

Google’s Gemini Notebook Now Integrates Expert Intelligence Feature

Google has introduced a new feature called “Expert Intelligence” in its AI-powered note-taking app, Gemini Notebook. This feature allows users to extract information from books they have purchased. By integrating Google Play Books, users can now access a wide range of functionalities within Gemini Notebook, including asking questions, generating plans, infographics, AI podcasts, and more based on the content of the books.

Enhanced User Experience and Practical Applications

During a demonstration with The Verge, Steven Johnson, Google Labs editorial director, showcased how users can leverage this tool. For instance, users can create a recipe book using insights from Michael Pollan’s Food Rules or apply management principles from Kim Scott’s Radical Candor to address workplace challenges. Additionally, users have the convenience of accessing the full text of the books directly in Gemini Notebook.

Collaboration with Publishers and Authors

Google has partnered with prominent publishers such as Penguin Random House, Johns Hopkins University Press, and Macmillan Publishers to support the Expert Intelligence feature. The collaboration extends to 15 authors, including Pollan, Scott, Steven Pinker, and Jennifer Wallace, who have customized “Featured Notebooks” with additional source material. Users can easily identify books that support this feature by looking for “Gemini Notebook” under the “Tools” section in Google Play Books.

Ensuring Data Security and Revenue Opportunities

To protect users’ purchased content, Google has implemented safeguards in Gemini Notebook. Users can share their notebooks, but individuals without ownership of certain books will only see them listed as sources without access to the full text. This approach encourages users to purchase the books they find valuable. Google aims to create a platform where users can leverage their knowledge while generating new revenue streams for authors and publishers.

Future Expansion and Integration

Google plans to extend the Expert Intelligence feature to AI Mode in Search and the Gemini app, enabling seamless integration across its ecosystem. The company also intends to broaden support for scholarly articles, magazine content, and newspapers in the future. This expansion underscores Google’s commitment to enhancing user experiences and knowledge accessibility.
