Configuring BMW X5 Models: Plug-In Hybrids and Electric Options

Europeans now have the option to configure the plug-in hybrid X5 models and the fully electric iX5 online. This expands the lineup that previously included six-cylinder gasoline and diesel versions on BMW’s configurator.

Article Summary

  • The X5 50e xDrive and iX5 60 xDrive both start at €102,800 in Germany.
  • BMW charges €125,000 for the X5 M60e xDrive before options.
  • Another M Performance variant will follow next year, with the V8-powered X5 M60 xDrive joining the lineup.

BMW is now offering more customization options for the latest X5 models, including three electrified versions of the luxury SUV. The configurators for the X5 50e xDrive, X5 M60e xDrive, and fully electric iX5 60 xDrive are now open, in addition to the existing gasoline and diesel powertrains.

While German pricing is used in this article, customers can configure these X5 models in other European markets, with prices and features varying by country.

The X5 50e xDrive: Starting at €102,800

The entry-level plug-in hybrid X5 50e xDrive starts at €102,800 in Germany. This model combines a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six gasoline engine with an electric motor, generating 482 horsepower and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque. BMW claims an electric range of up to 102 kilometers (63 miles) on the WLTP cycle.

With a 29-kWh battery pack, the X5 50e xDrive appeals to customers looking to commute on electricity while having the flexibility of a gasoline engine for longer trips.

BMW X5 M60e xDrive: Priced From €125,000

The X5 M60e xDrive, on the other hand, starts at €125,000 in Germany. With a combined output of 604 hp and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque, this electrified model is aimed at performance-oriented buyers who prefer not to go fully electric.

While sharing the same battery as the 50e xDrive, the M60e sacrifices some efficiency for performance, resulting in an electric range of 98 kilometers (61 miles). The M60e offers a blend of luxury SUV usability and electrified power, albeit at a significant starting price.

BMW iX5 60 xDrive: Also Starting at €125,000

The all-electric iX5 60 xDrive starts at €125,000, marking BMW’s first fully electric X5. It utilizes BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology and features new cylindrical cells in the large 141-kWh battery pack.

One of its key features is its impressive range, with BMW claiming up to 845 kilometers (525 miles) on the WLTP cycle. The iX5 also supports fast DC charging up to 460 kW, potentially reducing charging times significantly at suitable stations.

Like other X5 variants, the electric SUV will be manufactured at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, making it the first fully electric BMW produced at the U.S. factory.

Expanding the BMW X5 Lineup

The addition of three electrified variants provides more choices for customers in the fifth-generation X5 lineup. The conventional 40 xDrive and 40d xDrive models have been available for a few weeks.

BMW’s lineup is set to expand further, with the anticipated introduction of the V8-powered X5 M60 xDrive in Europe later this year. This offers buyers another option if they prefer a traditional combustion engine over electrified alternatives.

Future possibilities include a more affordable iX5 and a premium M Performance iX5, though BMW has not confirmed these models. Additionally, rumors suggest a new-generation X5 M with V8 power and a fully electric option. The hydrogen fuel-cell version, expected later in the decade, could also join the lineup as the iX5 60H xDrive.

BMW’s Power of Choice strategy is evident with the expanded configurator, offering a range of powertrains from six-cylinder gasoline engines to fully electric options. The only decision left for buyers is how many features to add before the initial price climbs even higher.
