Fallen Rockstars: GTA 6 Developer Faces Blacklisting Claims in Final Trial
UK Employment Tribunal Rules Against Blacklisting Claims on Rockstar Games
An employment tribunal in the UK recently made a decision in favor of Rockstar Games in a legal dispute involving staff members who were abruptly fired from the GTA 6 studio last year. The employees in question were let go in the autumn of last year, with Rockstar citing the leaking of confidential information as the reason for their dismissal. The IWGB Game Workers Union, representing the terminated workers, has accused Rockstar of union busting in relation to these firings.
According to a report by Game Developer, the preliminary tribunal ruling allows the dismissed staff to pursue blacklisting claims against Rockstar during the upcoming final trial of the case.
In the context of employment law, blacklisting trade unionists is described as the systematic compilation of information on individuals involved in trade unions, which is then used by employers to discriminate against them. This practice is often referred to as union busting. The IWGB intends to present their allegations along these lines during the trial against Rockstar.
“Our case will now proceed to a full hearing, where the evidence will be thoroughly examined,” stated Ellie Dunstan, one of the terminated Rockstar employees. “The truth of what transpired last October will finally come to light.”
“The tribunal’s decision to proceed to a full hearing indicates that significant questions remain regarding how these workers were identified, listed, and terminated – questions that demand further investigation,” added IWGB branch chair Spring McParlin-Jones. “Rockstar has consistently evaded accountability throughout this process, from the sudden dismissals to their reluctance to engage with evidence requests. It is crucial that the allegations against them are scrutinized thoroughly.”
Earlier this year, the terminated staff were denied interim relief that would have reinstated them on Rockstar’s payroll and restored any revoked work visas while the legal proceedings unfolded. The final trial is scheduled to take place from September 10th to October 15th.
