Google Introduces Selfie Video Feature for Account Access
Google has recently unveiled a new method for users to regain access to their accounts in case of lockouts, forgotten passwords, or lack of access to their usual authentication methods. Known as selfie video, this feature allows users to capture a short video of their face on a mobile device or computer, which is then compared to a previously recorded video by Google to confirm the account owner’s identity.
Setting up the selfie video feature is a simple process that involves looking at the device’s camera and following on-screen instructions to capture multiple angles of the face through various head movements. This setup is reminiscent of security features like Apple’s Face ID but does not require additional infrared light.
Google assures users that the reference video is securely stored in the cloud using encryption, making it accessible beyond the device where it was created. Users have the option to delete the video at any time and can also choose to share it for additional purposes, although its primary use is for account verification.
To log in to their accounts, users are required to capture another short video of their face performing specific movements to prove that it is a live recording and can be compared accurately to the stored reference video. Google employs multiple security layers to prevent impersonation attempts using photos or deepfake videos, in addition to their standard security measures against suspicious sign-ins.
The selfie video feature will be gradually rolled out to users worldwide, and interested individuals can check their eligibility and set up their selfie video at g.co/signin-selfie.
