Google’s DeepMind AI lab has joined forces with A24 in a groundbreaking partnership aimed at pioneering new movie production technologies. The primary objective is to empower future filmmakers with innovative tools that will broaden their storytelling capabilities. This venture marks a significant milestone as Google, for the first time, is investing approximately $75 million in A24, a renowned film studio, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.

Google, in its official announcement, stated that this collaboration brings together a leading research lab with a filmmaker-centric studio to assist artists in developing new workflows and techniques. The aim is to ensure that future tools are shaped by the creators who utilize them.

The partnership is set to encompass “multiple projects over time,” according to Google. Although specific movie titles involving Google have not been disclosed, both Google and A24 are focused on creating innovative tools for movie production and distribution. The initial emphasis is on bridging the gap between cutting-edge technology and the next generation of entertainment.

The non-exclusive multiyear deal, as reported by WSJ, does not grant Google access to A24’s film and television library data. Despite this, the collaboration is expected to draw attention within the film industry, particularly considering Google’s AI models trained on publicly available internet data and the historical disputes between movie studios like Disney, Universal, and Warner Bros with AI companies over alleged copyright infringements.

The partnership between Google and A24 also aims to involve the movie studio’s existing roster of artists, including acclaimed YouTube creator and Backrooms director, Kane Parsons. Parsons, in an interview with The Australian, expressed skepticism towards generative AI, referring to it as a reflection of broader cultural and economic challenges rather than true innovation.

Scott Belsky, an A24 partner and former chief strategy officer at Adobe, reassured that the tools being developed by Google and A24 will differ from the controversial AI models that prompt discomfort among users. Belsky emphasized the importance of preserving creative control and fostering a culture of risk-taking in the realm of movie production.
