Honda Teases Future Ute Model for Potential Australian Release
The renowned automaker Honda has officially announced its plans to introduce a third-generation version of the popular Ridgeline ute in the United States within the next two years.
The upcoming model, which will be manufactured at Honda’s Alabama factory where the current model is also produced, is set to feature a more rugged design and enhanced capabilities, according to the company.
The new design for the Ridgeline has been crafted by Honda’s California design studio, hinting at the possibility of an Australian launch when production commences in 2028.
With Jay Joseph taking the helm as CEO of Honda Australia in April 2025, the prospects for US-market models to be available in Australia have increased significantly, given his extensive experience at Honda North America.
While the second-generation Ridgeline was deemed unsuitable for the Australian market due to its advanced lifecycle, the new-generation model could potentially make its way to Australian showrooms in the future.
Mr. Joseph’s connections within Honda North America and the global Honda network have sparked discussions about introducing overseas models previously unavailable in Australia.
Similarly, Nick Parkington, Honda Australia’s general manager of automotive, has neither confirmed nor ruled out the possibility of the Ridgeline being offered in local showrooms.
The current Ridgeline, a five-seat dual-cab ute, shares similar dimensions with popular models like the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux, making it a competitive option in the market.
Priced at US$40,795 ($A58,484) in the United States, the Ridgeline is equipped with a powerful 3.5-liter V6 petrol engine, a nine-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive.
Setting itself apart from traditional utes, the Ridgeline features car-like monocoque construction, providing a unique driving experience compared to ladder-frame chassis vehicles like the Ranger and HiLux.
While details about the new generation’s construction, powertrain, and overall features remain undisclosed, Honda has confirmed its development of a new V6 hybrid powertrain for larger US-built models.
As Honda continues to advocate for more hybrid models in Australia, the market is witnessing the arrival of plug-in hybrid and electric utes from various manufacturers.
Looking ahead, Honda Australia plans to expand its lineup with more nameplates and explore new segments where the brand is not currently represented, aligning with its global strategy to introduce suitable models in local markets.
For those intrigued by Honda’s offerings, exploring the Honda showroom can provide valuable insights into the brand’s diverse range of vehicles.
