Amazon Leo has submitted a proposal to the Federal Communications Commission for the launch of up to 5,105 satellites that will offer space-based connectivity for mobile devices.

Chris Weber, vice president of business and product for Amazon Leo, expressed enthusiasm for the project’s timeline, aiming to commence deployment in 2028 with collaborative efforts.

The Amazon Leo D2D network is designed to supplement Amazon’s existing satellite network and leverage Globalstar’s direct-to-device network, enhancing connectivity options for users.

With over 390 Amazon Leo satellites already launched, commercial service is expected to roll out later this year, paving the way for 3,232 first-generation satellites by mid-2029.

The FCC has approved more than 4,500 second-generation satellites to further expand network coverage, aligning with Amazon’s strategic acquisition of Globalstar.

The initiative aims to capitalize on the rising demand for direct-to-device connectivity solutions in the global market.

Amazon highlighted the potential of the Leo D2D System in enhancing internet speed and accessibility for users worldwide, particularly in regions heavily reliant on mobile devices for connectivity.

Aside from individual users, direct-to-device services offer critical communication support for various sectors such as disaster response, fleet management, and remote operations.

Collaboration with Apple is on the horizon to integrate satellite services into compatible devices, further expanding the network’s utility.

The FCC application outlines plans for deploying satellites across five orbital shells, featuring advanced communication technologies for seamless connectivity.
