Letara’s Galactic Expansion: $16M Investment Fuels Growth Beyond Satellite Thrusters
Japan is investing heavily in its growing space industry and relaxing defense export restrictions to foster a domestic aerospace sector with global reach. Letara, a startup based in Sapporo, is leveraging this support to expand its development of hybrid propulsion systems for spacecraft. After initially focusing on small satellite thrusters, the company is now venturing into the creation of large rocket systems for space, defense, and security markets.
This expansion is fueled by a new funding round of ¥2.6 billion (~$16 million), aimed at transitioning years of academic research and demonstrations into a commercial business. The funding was co-led by Headline Asia, JIC Venture Growth Investment, and Incubate Fund, with strategic investments from NES Corporation, Toyoda Gosei, and Frontier Innovations, an investment fund managed by JAXA.
Letara’s technology centers around a hybrid rocket design that separates solid fuel from the liquid oxidizer needed for combustion. By utilizing inexpensive materials like plastic and rubber as solid fuel and implementing a proprietary manufacturing process, the company aims to deliver more thrust with less waste compared to traditional hybrid rockets.
The startup plans to address key challenges in hybrid propulsion, such as generating sufficient thrust, maintaining performance, and controlling combustion. The global market for hybrid rocket propulsion is projected to reach $2.6 billion by 2032, indicating a growing demand for this technology.
While Letara faces competition from other companies developing hybrid rocket technology, its academic roots at Hokkaido University have positioned it well to capitalize on emerging opportunities in the propulsion market. The company’s focus has shifted from satellite thrusters to defense contracts and launch services, reflecting the evolving demand for launch capabilities.
Letara is targeting a diverse range of customers, including satellite makers, launch companies, and governments. Its upcoming milestone of an in-orbit firing test with an overseas partner is crucial for commercialization. The company also aims to establish a scalable manufacturing process, quality controls, and a reliable supply chain for fuel and tanks.
Looking ahead, Letara is exploring the possibility of using recycled plastic as fuel with its hybrid technology, signaling a commitment to sustainable practices. Its strategic investor, Frontier Innovations, is an investment fund supported by JAXA, not a Greece-based IT firm as previously mentioned.
Overall, Letara’s innovative approach to hybrid rocket technology positions it as a key player in the evolving space industry landscape, with a strong focus on commercialization and global competitiveness.
