3 iPhone Weather App Settings Everyone Should Turn On

The iPhone’s Weather app is set for a major tune-up in the upcoming iOS 27 release. However, there are several overlooked features that can be both helpful and fun for users.

In addition to providing current and saved location temperatures and hourly forecasts, the Weather app offers a range of other useful features. Here’s how you can make the most of your pocket-weatherman for you and your family.

Severe Weather and Next-Hour Precipitation Notifications

If properly configured, the Weather app on your iPhone can send you location-based alerts for severe weather and expected rainfall. These notifications can help you prepare for bad weather in advance, preventing inconveniences like getting caught in the rain without an umbrella. They can also help protect against the dangers of severe weather, keeping users safe in risky situations.

Here’s how to set up Weather alerts:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Go to Apps and select Weather (or search for “Weather” in the search bar and tap it).
  3. Tap Location.
  4. Choose Always under Allow Location Access.
  5. Tap the back arrow in the top-left corner of the screen.
  6. Tap Notifications.
  7. Turn on the slider next to Allow Notifications.
  8. Under Always Deliver Immediately, enable Time Sensitive Notifications.
  9. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and tap Weather Notification Settings.

When you select Weather Notification Settings, the Weather app will open, allowing you to enable alerts for Severe Weather and Next-Hour Precipitation. You will also see your other saved locations at the bottom of the screen. Tap each location individually to manage notifications for Severe Weather and Next-Hour Precipitation.

Once you have set up these essential safety features, your iPhone will keep an eye on the weather in the background. But there’s more to explore within the Weather app.

Precipitation, Temperature, Air Quality, and Wind Maps

In the iPhone Weather app, scroll down to the Precipitation map widget. Tap on it to open a dynamic radar view with a one-hour or 12-hour precipitation forecast for your location.

You can also switch between different map views by tapping the layers icon (two black stacked squares) in the top right corner of the screen. Choose from precipitation, temperature, air quality, or wind maps.

While the temperature and air quality maps are static, the wind map shows real-time wind speed and direction, along with a forecast for the rest of the day.

Golfers may find the wind map particularly useful. Users can zoom in to view wind details for a specific location on the larger map. Give it a try!

Moon Phases

The Weather app also provides information about the Moon, which can be fun for kids and grandkids.

The Moon phase widget displays the current Moon phase (e.g., Waning Gibbous), the Moon’s illumination percentage, and the moonrise time.

Tapping on the widget allows users to track previous and future Moon phases using a slider.

Additionally, the app shows Moon phases in a calendar format, counts down the days until the next full Moon, and provides information about the Moon’s elliptical orbit.

If you haven’t explored the iPhone’s Weather app recently, now is the time to do so. Beyond daily weather forecasts, there are several fun, helpful, and important features waiting to be discovered.

If you typically use a third-party weather app, don’t forget to revisit Apple’s Weather app after the iOS 27 update in September. You may find yourself returning to the native Weather app for its range of features and functionalities.
