In a surprising move, Microsoft has announced that its Office 2019 apps for Mac will cease to function next month. This decision comes as the tech giant has chosen not to renew a certificate that validates Office licenses for Mac users. As a result, individuals who own Office 2019 for Mac will need to either upgrade to Office 2024 or subscribe to Microsoft 365 in order to continue editing documents.

Initially, Microsoft had assured users that “all your Office 2019 apps will continue to function” when it announced the end of support in 2023. However, a recent update to the support note has removed this claim, replacing it with a statement that guarantees no loss of data for existing Office 2019 apps.

Effective July 13th, both Office 2019 for Mac and Office 2021 for Mac will operate in a “reduced functionality mode,” allowing users to open files but preventing them from editing, saving, or creating new documents. This limitation will impact popular Office applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote.

While Microsoft will provide a certificate update for Office 2021, which is still supported until October 13th, 2026, Office 2019 for Mac users will be left without a solution. Microsoft has clarified that Office 2019 for Mac reached its end of support on October 10, 2023, and no longer receives updates. Unfortunately, due to the inability to update Office 2019 to the required version, reinstalling the software will not resolve the issue.

It’s worth noting that older versions of Microsoft 365 apps on Mac and iOS will also face similar challenges due to the certificate issue. However, a simple update should rectify the problem for those users.
