Portugal’s Breakthrough in Stealth Technology: Graphene-based Material for Radar-Absorption

GTechPlasma, a pioneering company, is spearheading the development of a cutting-edge graphene-based material with radar-absorbing properties. This innovative material has the potential to revolutionize stealth technology, making drones and warplanes virtually undetectable.

The project, led by GTechPlasma, aims to create a graphene-based coating for stealth applications. The customisable plasma-based system utilized in this endeavor was developed at the Plasma and Nuclear Fusion Institute at Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon.

Bruno Soares Gonçalves, co-founder of GTechPlasma, expressed their current focus on developing coatings for radar and electromagnetic radiation absorption. The material is specifically designed to absorb electromagnetic radiation, including radar waves, making it ideal for applications in the stealth and defense sectors.

Researchers at Instituto Superior Técnico highlighted the material’s potential in various areas, including electromagnetic shielding and radiation management. The goal is to significantly reduce radar signatures, with projections suggesting that an F-16 aircraft could have the radar signature equivalent to that of a bird.

Advancements in Graphene Manipulation

Graphene, a one-atom-thick sheet of carbon, is created from base ingredients like ethyl alcohol or methane. Precision plasma technology is essential for manipulating this ultra-thin material at an atomic level.

The president of the Plasma and Nuclear Fusion Institute emphasized the importance of controlling the entire graphene production process at an atomic level. Their patented device enables such precise control, positioning Portugal at the forefront of graphene-based stealth technologies.

Portugal’s Leading Role in Graphene-Based Stealth Innovations

Bruno Soares Gonçalves highlighted Portugal’s unique position in the development of graphene-based stealth technologies. While the United States currently possesses similar capabilities, Portugal’s material offers export potential, unlike the restricted material used on the F-35.

GTechPlasma’s production devices are already yielding high-quality graphene at an impressive rate. Collaborating with Plasmaphene, they aim to industrialize the machinery involved in graphene production, with the goal of producing multiple materials simultaneously.

Future plans involve developing ready-to-apply solutions such as coatings or paints that can be directly applied to drones. A strategic partnership with a Portuguese drone manufacturing company signifies the material’s potential in the defense sector.
