Microsoft is bringing original Xbox games to PC

Microsoft Expands Xbox Backward Compatibility to PC

In an exciting move, Microsoft is broadening its Xbox backward compatibility efforts by introducing original Xbox games to PC. This expansion kicks off with an early preview release featuring four classic Xbox games available on PC today. This initiative is part of a larger strategy to bring more Xbox console games to the PC platform in the future.

Classic Xbox Titles Now Available on PC

The first batch of games includes Blinx: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and Fuzion Frenzy. Players can purchase and download these titles on PC, and they are also included in all Xbox Game Pass subscriptions. Those who already own digital copies of these games can now enjoy them on PC or handheld devices like the Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X.

Enhanced Gaming Experience

Microsoft has implemented various PC features to enhance these games, allowing players to customize graphics settings while preserving the original gameplay. The additions include VSync support, up to 4x resolution upscaling, anisotropic filtering, enhanced anti-aliasing, fullscreen and windowed modes, and more.

Future Updates and Features

Achievements will be introduced to these classic Xbox games in the coming months, meeting the demands of both console and PC gamers. Additionally, all four titles will offer customizable language and audio settings to cater to diverse player preferences.

System Requirements and Compatibility

Most modern PCs are capable of running these Xbox games smoothly. Microsoft specifies that Windows 11 is required to run the original Xbox titles. For optimal performance, a GPU equivalent to GTX 1070 Ti and a six-core CPU like the Intel Core i5-10400 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 are recommended.

Preserving Gaming Legacy

Jason Ronald, VP of next generation at Xbox, emphasizes the significance of this move, stating that it marks the beginning of a broader effort to preserve Xbox games from the past and make them accessible on PC. This initiative aims to make it easier for players to enjoy their existing game collections across various devices.

Future Plans for Xbox and PC Integration

Ronald previously hinted at the arrival of classic Xbox games on PC during discussions about the next-generation Project Helix Xbox console. Microsoft’s upcoming Xbox will support PC games, and the company is developing a disc-to-digital feature to enable players to digitize their physical game libraries in preparation for future Xbox consoles.
