General Motors (GM) had previously announced its intention to remove CarPlay from its vehicles, especially focusing on electric vehicles. The company planned to phase out support for both CarPlay and Android Auto in favor of its own custom-built Google infotainment system. This initiative began with the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer and continued with subsequent EV models over the past two years. Despite this, the future of CarPlay support in GM vehicles remained uncertain.

Last year, GM escalated its efforts by aiming to eventually phase out CarPlay from its gasoline-powered vehicles as well. CEO Mary Barra clarified that this transition would not happen immediately, as the company was prioritizing EVs. However, GM intended to eventually implement its custom infotainment system across its entire vehicle lineup.

Recent reports suggest a change in GM’s stance towards CarPlay integration. According to Bloomberg’s David Welch, GM is planning to incorporate CarPlay into its upcoming 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks. These vehicles will feature a generous 60-inch screen, including a dedicated display for the front-seat passenger to access video content. GM aims to introduce this new system in future models.

While specifics about this collaboration between GM and Apple remain undisclosed, there are indications of a new CarPlay user interface developed jointly by the two companies. This development has sparked speculation about the adoption of CarPlay Ultra, a more advanced version of CarPlay. However, details are scarce, and it is premature to assume such a significant shift.

GM’s executive director of connected apps and services, Michael Wahlstrom, mentioned collaborating with Apple and Google to create a split-screen interface that combines projection and native experiences. This partnership may focus on enhancing integration rather than adopting CarPlay Ultra entirely.

The decision to integrate CarPlay back into GM vehicles could address concerns raised by customers following the initial removal of the feature. GM’s previous rationale for favoring its custom system was to achieve seamless integration with vehicle controls and gauges, particularly for features like the Super Cruise driver assistant. CarPlay Ultra could potentially offer this level of integration, but GM’s insistence on maintaining its native interface alongside CarPlay suggests a cautious approach.

Apart from integration concerns, GM’s decision to phase out CarPlay was also influenced by potential revenue opportunities. By promoting its proprietary services through a subscription model, GM aimed to capitalize on additional revenue streams. However, the negative response from customers and the risk of losing sales to competitors supporting CarPlay likely prompted a reconsideration of this strategy.

While the future of CarPlay in GM’s electric vehicles remains uncertain, recent developments, such as the inclusion of an Apple Music app in select models, indicate a willingness to accommodate CarPlay users. Whether GM will fully embrace CarPlay in its future lineup or continue to prioritize its custom infotainment system remains to be seen.

Overall, GM’s evolving approach towards CarPlay integration reflects the company’s efforts to balance customer preferences, technological advancements, and revenue opportunities in the competitive automotive market.
