Revolutionizing Splitting Bills: Apple Wallet’s Receipt-Scanning Feature
Apple is set to unveil its upcoming major software release in less than a week, but a few last-minute leaks have already made their way out before the big WWDC keynote on Monday.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has been sharing inside information on what Apple has in store for the upcoming iOS 27 release. The new iOS version is expected to be previewed next week and released to the public in the fall.
Aside from a major overhaul of Siri, including a standalone app, iOS 27 is also rumored to introduce generative AI photo editing, a modular camera, new AI-powered accessibility features, and overall enhancements to Apple Intelligence.
Not just focused on AI, Gurman also revealed that Apple Wallet will finally support creating custom passes natively, a feature that third-party apps have been providing for years. Additionally, a new bill-splitting feature is reportedly coming to Apple Wallet, utilizing the camera and visual intelligence to analyze and divide bills.
The feature will allow users to photograph a receipt, assign items to different people, and generate payment requests, according to sources familiar with the plan.

While Gurman connects this feature to Apple’s financial services expansion, such as Apple Pay and Apple Card, it seems to align more with Apple Intelligence. It is expected to be accessible in both the Wallet and Messages apps, potentially linking to Apple Cash and Tap to Cash introduced in iOS 18.
After snapping a receipt photo and assigning shares, users can request payments via Apple Cash through iMessage or use Tap to Cash for immediate payment. This feature could position Apple to compete with services like Venmo.
It remains to be seen if Apple will introduce unique branding for this feature, as it aims to streamline the bill-splitting process.
