Rockstar Devs Take a Stand: Forming a Union Amid Legal Battles
The Rockstar IWGB Game Workers Union: Standing Up Against Injustice
In a shocking turn of events last year, over 30 employees of Rockstar Games were terminated in what was perceived as an attempt to undermine unionization efforts by the GTA 6 developer. Rockstar justified these dismissals by accusing the developers of leaking confidential information about upcoming games. Subsequently, the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB) initiated legal action against the studio for allegedly refusing to engage in discussions regarding the terminations, a case that is ongoing. In response, Rockstar employees have united under the banner of the Rockstar IWGB Game Workers Union.
The union’s journey to public recognition was unexpected, as highlighted in a video shared on the IWGB Union’s YouTube channel. Despite the challenges faced, the union has grown stronger and more unified, with members from various Rockstar sites in Edinburgh, London, Leeds, Lincoln, and Dundee. Their primary objectives include advocating for pay transparency, flexible working conditions, and an end to excessive work hours, commonly known as “crunch.”
The union is currently gearing up for the final court hearing, the date of which has recently been confirmed. Their ultimate goal is to seek justice for the 31 terminated workers and send a message to companies like Rockstar that mistreatment of employees will not be tolerated. To support their cause, a donation fund has been established to assist in covering legal expenses and campaign costs aimed at holding Rockstar accountable.
The road ahead has been arduous, drawing attention even from mainstream media outlets. Earlier this year, the terminated employees were denied interim relief, a measure that would have provided them with temporary financial assistance. Additionally, several UK lawmakers have urged Rockstar to be more transparent and cooperative in their legal proceedings.
Solidarity is extended to all the dedicated developers involved in this struggle for justice.
