“Tab-tastic AI: Microsoft Edge Copilot Update Harnesses the Power of AI to Organize Your Web Browsing Experience”

Microsoft Edge is introducing a new feature that will enable its Copilot AI chatbot to gather information from all of the tabs you have open. When you engage in a conversation with Copilot, you can ask the chatbot questions about the content of your tabs, compare products you are browsing, summarize articles you have open, and more.

Microsoft has stated that users can choose which features they want to enable or disable. The company is discontinuing Copilot Mode, which had similar capabilities to gather information from tabs but also offered agentic features such as making reservations on your behalf. These agentic abilities have now been integrated into the “Browse with Copilot” tool.

In addition to these changes, Edge will also introduce several other AI features. This includes an AI-powered “Study and Learn” mode that can transform the article you are reading into a study session or interactive quiz. There is also a tool that can turn your tabs into AI-powered podcasts, similar to NotebookLM, as well as an AI writing assistant that will provide suggestions as you type on a webpage.

Users can grant Copilot access to their browsing history in order to provide more relevant and high-quality answers. Copilot in Edge on both desktop and mobile will have “long-term memory” capabilities, allowing it to personalize responses based on previous conversations. Additionally, users will notice a redesigned new tab page that combines chat, search, and web navigation, along with the Journeys feature that organizes browsing history into categories.

On the mobile app, users will be able to share their screen with Copilot and discuss the content they are viewing. Microsoft assures users that there will be clear visual indicators when Copilot is active, indicating whether it is taking an action, providing assistance, listening, or observing.
