BYD Yangwang U8 Luxury SUV Nearing Australian Debut
The Yangwang U8 has recently obtained certification from the Australian Design Rule (ADR), signaling its imminent launch in the local market.
BYD’s flagship SUV, the Yangwang U8, has been included in the Australian Government’s road vehicle approval database in a single variant. This variant boasts a 145kW turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine paired with four 220kW electric motors. The total system output is documented at 880kW, with a claimed 0-100km/h acceleration time of 3.5 seconds.
The filing specifies the regular-length, five-seat U8 model, omitting the extended-length, six-seat U8L version. It lists a tare weight of 3644kg, a braked towing capacity of 3500kg, and the option of 20- or 22-inch alloy wheels.
Although classified as a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), the Yangwang U8 is more accurately described as an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV). It features a 56.58kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, offering 230km of electric-only range on the CLTC cycle and a total combined range of 1205km.
Yangwang, as BYD’s premier brand, is positioned above Denza. While the Australian launch of Yangwang is yet to be confirmed, the filing mentions Yangwang as the brand name. This suggests that BYD may introduce a new brand in Australia or market the U8 under the Denza brand. Notably, Denza models were only recently introduced in Australia.
BYD Australia declined to comment on the launch plans for the Yangwang U8 when approached. Previously, as of August 2026, BYD Australia had stated no intentions to launch the U8 in Australia. However, the innovative features and technologies of the U8 are being evaluated in local conditions, hinting at potential future models for the Australian market.

Noteworthy features of the U8 include a luxurious leather interior, large screens, ‘crab walk’ and ‘tank turn’ functions, and emergency flotation capability for limited navigation in deep water. It also incorporates an ‘intelligent hydraulic body control system’ named DiSus-P+.
Constructed with a body-on-frame design like the Denza B5 and B8 SUVs, the U8 includes locking front and rear differentials.
In China, the U8 comes equipped with night vision, automatic parking, an in-car refrigerator, an augmented-reality head-up display, and a 22-speaker Dynaudio sound system. The front cabin features screens measuring 12.8, 23.6, and 23.6 inches, while the second row can be outfitted with dual 12.8-inch multimedia screens in addition to the standard 7.0-inch rear centre armrest screen.
BYD’s Vice President, Stella Li, confirmed plans to introduce Yangwang to the European market. Test vehicles spotted in Australia have exhibited right-hand drive configurations.
A left-hand drive variant of the Yangwang U8 has been showcased in local BYD showrooms.
In China, the U8 is priced from ¥1,008,000, approximately A$216,000. This pricing aligns with the premium positioning of the U8 compared to the Denza B8, known as the Fangchengbao Bao 8 in China, priced from ¥419,800 (A$90,000). The Australian-market B8 starts at $93,195 before on-road costs.
Given the similar pricing of the B8 in both markets, it is anticipated that the Yangwang U8 will have a price tag exceeding $200,000 in Australia if launched.
Measuring 5319mm long, 2050mm wide, and 1930mm tall on a 3050mm wheelbase, the U8 surpasses the Denza B8 in size despite omitting a third row of seating.
Since its debut with the U8 in 2023, the Yangwang brand has expanded to include the U7 electric and PHEV sedan, as well as the U9 electric supercar.
In September, Yangwang teased a new ultra-luxury flagship sedan, codenamed HU, featuring Rolls-Royce-inspired styling. Spy shots have also captured an SUV model resembling the HU.
Yangwang vehicles are positioned in the luxury segment. In China, the U8 is flanked by the U7, priced from ¥658,000 (~A$141,200), and the U9, starting at ¥1,800,000 (~A$386,200).
