BMW Passenger Screen: The Future of Luxury Cars

Whether you embrace it or not, the passenger screen is quickly becoming a standard feature in luxury vehicles. BMW recently joined the trend with a dedicated display for the front seat passenger, first seen in the 7 Series facelift and now making its way to the all-new X5. However, there are some notable differences between the two models.

In the 2027 7 Series, the passenger screen is included as standard equipment, meaning it is not optional. On the other hand, in the X5, the extra display is an optional feature. Despite this, all promotional images of the X5 showcase the supplementary screen, which is a 14.6-inch full-HD setup identical to the one in the 7 Series.

The passenger screen in the X5 offers a wide range of entertainment options, supporting third-party apps for videos, music, games, and even video conferencing. It works in conjunction with the interior camera, which also monitors the driver for distractions and automatically dims the screen if needed. Additionally, the display has a shield function to prevent content from being visible to the driver.

When the car detects that there is no passenger in the front seat, the extra display switches to a reduced mode to blend with the main 17.9-inch infotainment display and the Panoramic Vision windshield projection. The screen’s background changes to match the driving mode’s theme and ambient lighting in this minimized state.

BMW Responds to Customer Demand

In an interview, Stephan Durach, Senior Vice President UI/UX Development at BMW, revealed that there is a significant demand for passenger screens, especially in larger vehicles. Customers express a desire for a dedicated screen for consuming content, prompting BMW to introduce this feature in their lineup.

It is expected that upcoming models like the 5 Series facelift and the second-generation X7 will also offer the optional passenger screen, with the X6 G66 rumored to follow suit. While the X5 inherits the front passenger screen from the 7 Series, it does not feature the 31.3-inch, 8K-resolution Theatre Screen found in the back of other BMW models.

Overall, the passenger screen is a glimpse into the future of luxury car interiors, providing advanced entertainment and connectivity options for both drivers and passengers. As technology continues to evolve, we can expect to see more innovative features like this in upcoming BMW models.
