Apple is currently developing a new security feature for iPhones that automatically locks the device when it detects that it has been snatched from the user’s hand. To prevent false positives, the code includes safeguards such as successful biometric authentication, certain foreground app activities that could be mistaken for theft signs, and a backoff mechanism that temporarily suppresses automatic locks after repeated lock events. AutoLock also employs a voting system where a potential theft signal can request a lock, while safeguards like biometrics, familiar locations, or specific app activities can veto it.

In addition to these details, the code also mentions a location-based safeguard similar to Stolen Device Protection that considers whether the iPhone is in a familiar place. However, the feature is still under development and not yet available as a user-facing option in iOS 27.2 beta 2. Apple has enabled the AutoLock service in the background but has kept the component that actually locks the iPhone disabled, possibly for testing purposes.
