"Coders will never forgive me for this level": Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 has a rotatable "fleshmetal" puzzle map that drove its own development team crazy

In the distant future filled with darkness and despair, a new challenge awaits beyond the horrors of war. Imagine a massive, rotating lock adorned with tentacles, with your valiant Space Marine or Sister of Battle as the key to unlock its mysteries.

Prepare for the launch of Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 by Auroch Digital, where the game’s principal designer, Matt Bone, sheds light on the unique and imaginative environments players will encounter. One such level, known as Vicious Circles, promises to test your skills like never before.

“Diversity and innovation were key goals for Boltgun 2,” Bone shared in a recent email exchange. “The ‘Vicious Circles’ level exemplifies this vision, presenting players with a complex and challenging puzzle to solve. The interconnected rotating rings and colossal spinning cog create a dynamic environment where strategic movement is crucial for progress. Players must navigate these shifting platforms to unlock new areas and uncover hidden secrets.”

However, the intricate design of Vicious Circles posed significant challenges for the development team. Bone explained, “Implementing enemies and pickups on moving platforms proved to be a technical nightmare for our coders. Additionally, rendering a massive cog with numerous intricate details tested the limits of performance optimization.”

Beyond technical hurdles, the artistic team faced their own trials in bringing Vashtorr’s twisted spaceship to life. The fusion of flesh and metal in the level’s design demanded meticulous attention to detail, especially considering the need for multiple configurations to accommodate the level’s dynamic nature. “The artists’ meticulous work had to adapt to various rotations of the level, ensuring seamless integration of the ‘fleshmetal’ aesthetic while avoiding visual inconsistencies,” Bone elaborated.

Despite the challenges encountered during development, Bone expressed confidence in the final result. “The effort put into creating Vicious Circles was well worth it. I believe players will find this level both memorable and engaging,” he remarked with a hint of pride amidst the chaos.

As players anticipate the release of Boltgun 2, the allure of intricate and elaborate game environments continues to captivate audiences. Whether exploring the Clockwork Mansion in Dishonored 2 or navigating the machinations of Anoat City in Star Wars: Dark Forces, the appeal of grandiose mechanical settings remains undeniable. Share your favorite or most challenging gaming environments that have left a lasting impression on you.
